Cape Point is shaped by one of the world’s most dramatic coastlines. Constant exposure to powerful winds, salt air and the elements means that maintaining our infrastructure is just as important as protecting the extraordinary natural environment that surrounds it.
As part of this ongoing commitment, the Flying Dutchman Funicular – the only commercial funicular of its kind in Africa – will be temporarily closed from 20 July with an expected re-open date in mid-September while essential upgrade and maintenance works are carried out. These planned improvements are designed to enhance the long-term reliability and performance of the funicular, ensuring it continues to serve visitors for many years to come.

Cape Point remains fully open throughout this period. Here’s everything you need to know before your visit.
Getting to the Lighthouse
During the closure, visitors can still reach the lighthouse in one of two ways.
Shuttle Service
A shuttle service will operate between the main car park and the lighthouse area for the duration of the maintenance period.
Shuttle fares:
- Adult Return: R80
- Adult Single: R70
- Scholar/Pensioner Return: R40
- Scholar/Pensioner Single: R35
Please note that the shuttle service is not complimentary and is not wheelchair accessible.
Walking Route
Visitors are also welcome to make their way to the lighthouse on foot via the designated walking route.
The path is well marked and rewards walkers with some of the most spectacular views on the Cape Peninsula, making the journey part of the Cape Point experience itself. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing water, particularly during warmer weather.
Visitors Requiring Wheelchair Access
We regret that during the maintenance period, the lighthouse area will not be accessible to visitors requiring wheelchair access.
The Flying Dutchman Funicular is the only wheelchair-accessible route to the lighthouse, and neither the shuttle service nor the walking route can accommodate wheelchairs. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding while these essential improvements are completed.
